a bit of bird words

31/100

I still haven't written about my love of micro-sites1 but I can tell you I have a few, including my most favorite one on compost.party where I post haiku I've written. You can read it (when compost.party is online2) at wren.compost.party.

I've been carefully nurturing the skill of writing poetry. Just creating something itself is a joy, but poetry especially has been really helpful in getting me out of my own head. It's dreadfully simple for my brain to latch on to some terrible past (that's the depression) or some horrific future (that would be the anxiety) and when the grip on my psyche is strong enough to make a crocodile's jaw drop, that's usually when I find that the world and my own sense of self vanish, consumed by cognitive shadows.

Poetry wrenches open that metaphorical maw, forces me to turn my mind outward, examine the things and places around me as well as how I fit within them. If I'm thinking about how magpie parents enjoy a relaxing nap in the shade as much as we do, or how an apple tree fruited again after a barren year, or just how slowly the sun can rise over the horizon...these are the things that keep me from getting lost amongst my own thoughts.

I've told myself that I want to write at least 100 haiku before I take a leap and try to get one published. The count in the title is what I'm up to now on that microsite. I don't write every day, or even with great frequency, but I do try to keep my eyes and ears (and other senses) open. And if I never get published, that's okay. I still wrote them, still posted them somewhere where they can be read, and I still let my mind be free of its shadows and instead ponder the softness of a petal's shadow.

  1. Not as described on Wikipedia. As I use it, briefly: a website of less than 5 pages dedicated to a singular topic. Fanlistings commonly meet this criteria.

  2. It runs on reclaimed hardware and solar power, so it isn't always online. The project itself is incredibly cool and I really recommend checking out my compost.party neighbors when it's online.
